A mother of two has tragically lost her life after crashing her vehicle while en route to hospital, following an alleged stabbing incident in Bridgend, South Wales.

Eleanor Barnfield, aged 47, was reportedly attacked at a retirement village on Monday morning. Witnesses indicated that the dedicated housing association worker attempted to drive herself to seek medical assistance. However, she was only able to travel a short distance of approximately 300 yards before she collapsed while behind the wheel and collided with a wall on Coity Road.

Investigation into the Incident

Despite being rushed to hospital, Eleanor succumbed to her injuries later that afternoon. Authorities have since arrested a 61-year-old male from Bridgend on suspicion of murder, as they conduct a thorough investigation around the Ger-y-Nant area, where Ms Barnfield was employed.

A statement from South Wales Police confirmed that officers were dispatched to the scene at around 12:43pm on Monday, following reports of a car crash. Upon arrival, they discovered that the driver had sustained stab wounds that were not related to the collision itself. Medical staff, despite their best efforts, could not save her.

Family and Community Tributes

In a heartfelt statement released through the police, Eleanor’s family expressed their grief, stating, “Mum was the kindest, most loving, bravest person in the world. She meant everything to us and will be forever loved and missed deeply by her devoted family and friends. She was our rock.”

Chief Superintendent Jason Rees extended his condolences to Eleanor’s loved ones, reassuring the community that a dedicated team of detectives and specialists is actively pursuing the case. He thanked residents for their understanding and cooperation, especially those affected by the incident, and noted that an increased police presence would be evident during the ongoing investigation.

Jo Oak, chief executive of the Valleys to Coast housing association, expressed the organisation’s sorrow over the loss of their colleague, describing Eleanor’s passing as a devastating tragedy.
