The use of artificial intelligence in job applications has become increasingly common, but it may jeopardise candidates’ chances of securing employment. Many job seekers are turning to AI for assistance, but where do we draw the line between acceptable use and unethical practices?

Graduate’s Struggle with Job Applications

Tom, a 22-year-old graduate from Maidstone, offers a firsthand account of the daunting job search process. After completing his geography degree last year, he applied for over 200 positions before finally securing a role as a restaurant manager last month. Tom described the ordeal as “exhausting” and “demoralising,” noting that many employers did not even respond to his applications. He credits AI with helping him navigate this challenging landscape.

AI’s Role in Job Hunting

According to Tom, the pressure to create the perfect application can be overwhelming, particularly when applying for multiple jobs in a single day. He believes it is “hypocritical” for employers to request candidates refrain from using AI tools while they themselves employ similar technologies to filter applications. Although he refrained from using AI during interviews or assessments, he utilised it to refine his CV and cover letters, ensuring he included the pertinent keywords that automated screening tools often look for.

Employer Attitudes Towards AI Usage

A recent survey conducted by the Institute of Student Employers (ISE) revealed that a growing number of UK employers are becoming more accepting of AI use in specific stages of the recruitment process. Out of 155 leading graduate employers surveyed, the primary areas where AI assistance is welcomed include drafting cover letters and CVs, as well as answering online application questions. However, 92% reported having encountered or suspected AI misuse in job selection, a significant rise from 85% the previous year. This misuse often manifests as candidates employing AI during online interviews or assessments, raising ethical concerns within the hiring process.
